Resveratrol is found both in natural foods and in dietary supplements.

Natural Foods:

Wine - Resveratrol can be found in varying amounts in wine. As a general rule, red wines have more resveratrol than whites. This is because red wines are fermented on the grape skins longer than white wines - thus many of the anti-oxidants (including resveratrol) that are naturally present in the grape skins are extracted into the wine.

Additionally, grapes/wines grown in humid environments tend to have more resveratrol than wines grown in more arid environments. The theory behind this phenomena is that grapes grown in humid environments produce more resveratrol in order to fight damaging fungus (i.e. grapes grown in arid environments do not need to produce as much resveratrol to survive).

Wines that have been found to have some of the highest levels of resveratrol are muscadine wines (from the muscadine grapes native to the humid South Eastern United States) and pinot noir (the noble vinifera grape native to Burgundy France, but which is also successfully cultivated in California, Oregon, Washington State, & New York). Pinot noir grown in more humid regions tend to have more resveratrol. Below are some general wine guidelines.

Type of Wine
Resveratrol (mg/liter)
Red wines from around the world
2 to 12.5
Muscadine wines
up to 40
White wines from around the world
.05 to 2

Grapes - Resveratrol can be found the skins, seeds, and pomace of grapes (it is found in its highest concentration in the skins). As follows, resveratrol is also found in grape juice (notable grape varieties with relatively high levels of resveratrol are muscadine grapes, pinot noir grapes, and concord grapes).

In general, grapes are good sources of vitamins C, B1, and B6 as well as manganese and potassium. Grapes are an excellent snack choice when counting calories (Concord grapes have about 60 calories per cup).

Blueberries - Like grapes, blueberries are packed with numerous antioxidants including resveratrol. They also contain significant amounts of vitamins C & E, manganese, and dietary fiber. Blueberries also an excellent snack choice when counting calories (about 80 calories per cup).

Peanuts - Peanuts have long been known for their rich protein content. Now peanut lovers can revel in the fact that they contain resveratrol (as well as significant amounts of manganese, copper, folate, and vitamin B3). Peanut sprouts are also a rich source of resveratrol.

up to 1.25
Peanut Butter (1 cup)
up to .15
Peanuts (1 cup)
up to .25
Boiled Peanuts (1 cup)
up to 1.30

Dietary Supplements:

There are numerous companies that offer supplements containing resveratrol.

In general, these supplements include pills or powders derived from:

There are also companies that offer resveratrol in a liquid form or through a transdermal "patch" (like a nicotine patch).

The amount of resveratrol in supplements varies widely. In pills there can be as little as 5 mg. per pill at a purity of 10% or less. On the other end of the spectrum, there are pills that offer nearly 1000 mg. of resveratrol per pill at a purity of 99%.

Science is still determining the most effective dosage of resveratrol for humans.

Note: When choosing a resveratrol product make sure it contains trans- resveratrol rather than cis-resveratrol (trans-resveratrol is the more active form - that is, it will activate sirtuins).
